Misalignment of rolls in continous casting results in the production of strains, known as misalignment strains, εM. These strains can be either tensile or compressive dependent upon the misalignment direction. In the simulation below positive strains indicate tensile strain and negative compressive.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure the correct alignment of rolls, the magnitude of these strains will depend on a number of factors. In this simulation you can observe the effects of several key casting parameters εM.

To calculate εM, the following equations were used:

Equation: Fp = ρ× g × h

Equation: εB = 300×S×ΔM/l²

Note: the visual representation of misalignment in this simulation is greatly exaggerated (approximately ×10), so that the small changes that occur can be seen.
