The fifth annual steeluniversity Challenge will run for 24 hours from 12 noon GMT on Wednesday 27 January to 12 noon on Thursday 28 January 2010. During this time registered participants will be challenged to make steel plate for a yellow goods application. The task demands intelligent management decisions and engineering proficiency.
Initiated in 2005, the competition is aimed at students and new employees in the steel industry. The competition challenges the entrant to deliver the order at minimum cost. Last year the competition attracted nearly 480 participants from 26 countries making almost 16,000 individual attempts. Entrants can repeat the exercise as many times as they wish during the 24 hours to reach a successful conclusion or improve on a previous attempt. The winners are those who successfully deliver the order at the lowest cost.
There will be two levels of entry with two separate winners; a university student entry and a steel industry entry. Team entries will be accepted, but only one prize will be awarded per team. Each winner will receive €500 which will be presented with the prize at a World Steel Association event. Last year’s winners attended a prize giving ceremonies in Shanghai or London and, together with the cash prize, they received a specially commissioned trophy which they keep for a year.
The World Steel Association would like to acknowledge the support of Mick Steeper of Siemens VAI, Bill Timms of Corus and James Attree & Joe Dias of The Steel Construction Institute in helping to prepare this year's Challenge.
