Packaging steels are made from low carbon cold-rolled steel strip with gauges (thicknesses) ranging from 0.13 to 0.50 mm.
The raw material for packaging steels is hot-rolled steel coils between 2 and 3 mm in thickness.
Apart from reducing thickness, cold rolling is also essential in optimizing the mechanical (e.g. strength, formability, etc.) and surface properties of the steel.
It is finished by applying a coating of tin or chromium through an electrolytic process, and is supplied as coils or cut into sheets.
This section describes the various stages as steel is transformed from hot strip to packaging steel.
