The e-learning modules at steeluniversity.org are organized under four main sections: Processing, Applications, Ferrous Metallurgy and Sustainability. Links are provided between relevant topics in neighbouring sections.

The Processing modules provide a unique opportunity to tour a virtual steel works and also to run a virtual steelworks, controlling the composition, temperature, time, product quality and costs during the production of a chosen grade of steel. These game-like simulations provide open-ended problem solving exercises and hands-on learning, enabling the user to put theory into practice. User guides are available to download for all simulations.

Virtual tensile, hardness and Charpy impact tests can be conducted at steeluniversity.org, either as stand-alone activities or as part of a complex exercise to sample and test a steel plate and determine whether it satisfies a particular specification.

The Applications modules address the selection of suitable steels for different applications in different markets. This includes an exercise that offers the opportunity to design and make, profitably, an order for a high strength steel for an offshore oil platform.

The vital contribution steel makes to sustainable developments is also addressed, together with an introduction to life cycle thinking and assessment techniques.

Certificates are available to record achievements and attainments in some of the-learning modules.

A simple registration procedure is available to enable some of the larger exercises and simulations to be linked or completed in more than one session.
