The individual test piece preparation and virtual mechanical tests introduced in the previous sections can be run as standalone exercises or combined as a complete ‘Sample and Test’ exercise. To run the complete exercise you will need to login so that you can save and retrieve your data.

The aim of the exercise is to sample and test a steel plate and then analyse the results to determine whether it meets the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping standard (discussed in the first section of this module). First you must decide how many test pieces you will prepare and determine the size and location of the plate sample to be taken. After preparing the samples, the next stage is to carry out an appropriate number of tests to determine the mechanical properties of the plate. Finally, you must compare your results with the standard and decide whether the plate has met all the specified requirements and can be supplied to the customer.

In order to complete this as a linked exercise, which includes sampling a steel plate, preparing test pieces and conducting virtual tensile, Charpy and hardness tests, you will need login so that you can save and retrieve your data. If you wish to do this please login below. However if you choose to proceed you may only complete exercises in standalone mode.
