In this section you will prepare 'virtual' test pieces for tensile, impact toughness and hardness testing.
To do this, you will cut a sample from a length of rolled steel plate. Then, you will cut out test coupons, from which you will machine the test pieces. It is also essential that you properly identify each test coupon, so that you know its orientation with respect to the original plate when it comes to testing.
After completing this task, you can proceed to determine the tensile, impact toughness and hardness properties of this steel, and decide whether it meets the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping standard that you have studied in the previous section.
