Certain emissions and the resource extraction have impacts on the environment. Climate change, acid rain, nutrient enrichment and summer smog are environmental effects caused by emissions from the technosphere.
For assessing the significance of environmental parameters so-called impact categories such as GWP are used to describe the effect on the environment.
The particular environmental parameters – resource depletion, emissions to air, water and soil – contribute to more than one impact category, for example, carbon dioxide (CO2) accounts for Global Warming Potential and sulfur dioxide (SO2) for Acidification Potential.
Furthermore one emission can contribute to different impacts, for example, methane (CH4) makes a contribution to Global Warming Potential and Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential.
