The life cycle inventory of a system depends in size, depth and complexity on the scope definition of the study. Usually the first step is to construct a flow diagram that includes the major elements of relevance and presets the scope of the study. These elements include the life cycle stages and the major flows to be taken into consideration.

A general flow diagram typically contains the main life cycle phases which can further be detailed to specific process information and / or processing routes.
