In addition to defining the functional unit it is also very important to define that part of the life cycle to which the analysis is to be applied. This means identifying the boundaries of the analysis.

The life cycle perspective means to look on a system from 'cradle to grave', all up- and downstream processes are considered. 'Gate to gate' considers a specific production site or sites and 'Cradle to gate' takes upstream processes into account.
